MASON CITY — Marshalltown senior Tayven Dutton had three of his team’s four hits in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Mason City on Wednesday night at Roosevelt Field.
The host Riverhawks (20-11, 9-5) took both games in four innings by scores of 15-0 and 17-2.
Mason City ace left-hander Gabe Ries got the pitching win in both games, going two innings in the opener and all four in the nightcap. He allowed a combined four hits and two walks while striking out 12 altogether in the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division doubleheader.
The Riverhawks totaled 28 hits and swept the four-game season series by a combined 52-2. They have won 22 straight in the series.
Freshman Aiden Holmgren took the loss in Game 1 for MHS (6-23, 0-14), allowing 10 runs — seven earned — on eight hits and three walks. Dutton had the Bobcats’ only hit in the opener.
Freshman Garrett Thede got the loss in the second game, allowing six runs — three earned — on six hits and one walk while striking out one in two innings.
Dutton went 2-for-2, driving in both Bobcat runs with a single in the third inning. Holmgren reached on an error and Luke Stalzer walked before Sam Greazel singled to load the bases. One out later, Dutton drove in two runs with a hit up the middle.
Marshalltown closes conference play at home tonight with a twinbill against Waterloo East.
