Marshalltown Community School District Student Enrollment Update

Every student matters, and enrollment helps tell the story of our schools and the families we serve. Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) is providing an update on 2026-27 enrollment, including student counts, open enrollment trends, and what the numbers mean for future district funding.

MCSD tracks enrollment in several ways. Actual enrollment represents the number of resident students enrolled in district schools. This year, actual enrollment is 4,630.8, compared with 4,784.40 last year.

Served enrollment provides a broader picture of the students the district serves and is an important measure of the district’s educational responsibilities. Served enrollment decreased from 4,928.65 to 4,789.55, a change of -139.10 students.

Certified enrollment is the official count submitted to the Iowa Department of Education and used in state funding calculations. Certified enrollment decreased from 5,297.15 to 5,120.45, a change of -176.7 students.

Looking at the bigger picture, MCSD has seen a net gain of approximately 200 students over the past decade, with about 100 more students open-enrolling into the district and 100 fewer open-enrolling out. This marks a significant shift in the district’s enrollment trajectory, particularly for those who have seen these changes firsthand over the past 10 years.

While all three figures provide useful information, the district encourages the community to pay particular attention to served enrollment when considering the number of students the district supports.

MCSD submits its certified enrollment information to the Iowa Department of Education by October 15 each year. Recent legislation establishes a second enrollment count date this school year on January 15, 2027. The enrollment figure used to calculate the district’s budget for the 2027-28 school year will be the average of the October 15 and January 15 counts, in accordance with state requirements.

Open enrollment trends provide additional context. The number of students open-enrolling out of MCSD to other school districts decreased from 486.7 to 464, a decrease of 22.7 students.

At the same time, open enrollment into the district increased from 129.2 to 139.1, an increase of 9.9 students. The district views these trends as important pieces of the broader enrollment picture and will continue to monitor them.

At this time, the district does not have a confirmed explanation for the larger enrollment decline this year. Many school districts across Iowa have also experienced enrollment decreases. MCSD will continue to study its enrollment data, consider factors that may be contributing to these changes, and evaluate potential impacts on district long-term planning.

MCSD is committed to keeping the community informed as it learns more. Additional updates and information about enrollment trends, their potential impacts, and the district’s planning efforts will be shared as they become available.

“Enrollment is an important measure for our district, and we want our community to understand both the numbers and what they represent,” said Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte. “We will continue to review the data carefully and use what we learn to support thoughtful planning and decisions that serve our students and schools.”
